I recently bought myself a new toy, however, it was coated in cosmoline. I managed to get this crap out of the bore, mechanism and other hiding places, but I have yet to find a way to get it off of a wooden stock without destroying the finish. I have read many posts on line as well as watching many videos on YouTube, but most of them have to do with using hot water or steam ( which I would like to avoid doing ).

I thought about taking the stock out and putting it in the trunk of my car to sweat it out, but I am unsure if that method would allow it all to leach out of the wood.

Any ideas?

WD-40,olive oil. Try it in a small area that won't show. Both work wonders!

I have used diesel on the metal parts but I would check it in a small area and boiled a towel in water and wraped it around the wood parts for a couple minutes.

Boiled linseed oil. Takes a lot of elbow grease but works great. Used it on my M1. Check CMP ( civilian marksmanship program) website.

I thought of mineral spirits but was wondering if tung oil would work as well?

I was able to get it all of with 80% rubbing alcohol. Just to be sure, I put the stock in a newspaper lined cardboard box in my trunk just to leach anything out. There was very little that seeped out of the 128* temperature of my trunk.

I need to get a new bottle of Tung oil. I found my old bottle, but apparently somewhere along the way the bottle cracked and it turned rock hard.
